ATLANTA (AP) -- New numbers show that Georgia has seen a slight drop in the number of motorcycle fatalities and so have the counties in the immediate Gainesville area.
The Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) reported that new data made available Wednesday shows that the state had slightly fewer deadly motorcycle wrecks in 2012, where there were 132, than during 2011, when there were 149.
The statistics show that the majority of motorcycle fatalities occurred in urban areas and in the foothills of the north Georgia mountains.
Authorities say Fulton County saw the greatest number of motorcyclist fatalities statewide.
Also, DeKalb County saw a significant increase in the number of motorcyclist fatalities from 2011 to 2012.
Statewide, the number declined from 149 in 2011 to 132 in 2012.
In the Gainesville area (Hall and adjacent counties for this story), there were 25 motorcycle fatalities in 2011 and 20 last year. Both years, Hall and Gwinnett counties accounted for the highest number - seven and eight, respectively, in 2011, and three and six, respectively, in 2012.
Fatalities were also recorded in White (3), Jackson (2), Dawson (1), Barrow (1), Forsyth (2), and Lumpkin (1) in 2011. Last year, in addition to Gwinnett and Hall, fatalities occurred in Banks (1), Dawson (2), Jackson (2), Forsyth (2), Barrow (2), Lumpkin (1), and Habersham (1).
