CLARKESVILLE - The fresh winds of Spring are bringing a revival to the visual identity of North Georgia Technical College (NGTC).
Changes across the campus include building additions, department moves, and additional offerings - and a new mascot.
For many years, the college was known as the Tradewinds. For the last 11 years, NGTC had been known as the Eagles. However, there have been many versions of the eagle, some "official" but most unofficial. As the college reviewed its "spirit " history and looked to the future, officials say it became apparent that one definitive mascot icon for campus life identity was needed. Also of note, there are many collegiate Eagles in the area including Toccoa Falls College and even Technical College System of Georgia sister school, Chattahoochee Tech. NGTC's desire was to be easily distinguished from the others.
So, plans were made to refresh the logo and completely establish a mascot for the school. Graphic designs from several artists in the area were collected and narrowed down to two possible mascots: Wolves and Eagles.
"We looked at many, many other alternatives to the Eagle that were appropriate to the area and the school and ultimately chose the wolf," said Campus Life Director Sherry Seal. "Since we now have the Cross Country team and since most of our other intercollegiate sports involve running, the idea of a mascot known for speed, strength, and cunning on the ground made sense."
With that in mind, a campaign was launched to include students, faculty, and staff in the mascot decision. Open voting ran for eight days during which anyone could vote, and they could vote as many times as they wanted. Votes were collected through a variety of methods including e-mail, facebook posts, and paper ballots in boxes stationed around the campuses.
The winning mascot was announced at NGTC's recent Springfest (aka Eaglefest).
"This is an exciting time to be a part of North Georgia Tech," said President Dr. Gail Thaxton. "We are constantly expanding our offerings and improving the possibilities for our students' success. Announcing the mascot...was a proud moment for us all."
