GAINESVILLE - A team from the World Language Academy (WLA) and one from Davis Middle placed first in their respective divisions at the State Odyssey of the Mind Tournament recently and have qualified for the World Finals May 21-
26 at Michigan State University.
The WLA competition problem was "the email must go through." The seven team
members had to design and build an email system including intake, server, spam filter, and outtake that would deliver to three distinct physical locations. This device was incorporated into a seven- minute production where the students wrote the script, made the costumes, and told the story of three email's journey to two planed destinations and one off beat location due to the email being diverted by the spam filter.
Team members are: Sarah Catherine Willard (5th), Kennedy Turpin (5th), Lydia Ebbs (5th), Carragan Moody (5th), Zoey Blankenship (4th), Julianna Velaj (4th), and Sofia Moreno (4th).
C.W. DAVIS TEAM
The C.W. Davis team participated in the structural engineering problem called "Tumble Wood".
The team designed and built a 15 gram structure that had to slide down a ramp
and travel 18 inches then placed on to a testing device for strength while performing a team created performance all in 8 minutes. The Davis structure held 920 pounds before breaking, which set a new record weight for the state of Georgia in all age categories.
Davis team members are Mac Arendall (7th), Jordan Keller (8th), Hannah Lee (7th), Emily Shewbert (7th), Michaela Stubbs (8th), Misa Suh (7th), and Ali Winiesdorffer (8th).
