GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville High School Naval JROTC Varsity Precision Air Rifle Team took first place in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Area 6 Championship.
The team competed against six other schools, taking first place against the number one and number two seeds, Lumpkin and North Forsyth high schools, respectively.
Gainesville Schools Supt. Merrianne Dyer says the first place win gives the Red Elephants "home range" advantage, shooting in the first round semi-finals against the 6th-ranked Area 8 team. Following the first round semi-finals are the state semi-finals and finally, the State Championship. The individual scores were as follows (out of a possible 300 points):
Bianca Leija (senior)-288 (first from left)
Kathryn Youngblood (senior)-282 (second from left)
Talisa Soto (freshman)-276 (fourth from the left)
The final team member, Amy Delgado (freshman) shot a 290, instantly qualifying her to compete in the Georgia State Championship as an individual.
