Kayakers, swimmer rescued off Georgia coast

By The Associated Press
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (AP) Authorities say two kayakers and a swimmer who were pulled into the Atlantic Ocean by the outgoing tide were rescued off Tybee Island.

Tybee Island Fire Chief Skip Sasser said the people got caught in the tide shortly before 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/17enPZB) that part of the same group in another kayak was able to paddle to a sandbar, where one of them dialed 911 from a cellphone.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene, and one of the fire department's rescue boats was launched.

Sasser said that at one point, one of the kayaks overturned. He said two of the boaters did not have exposure suits on, and one of them was treated for hypothermia by medics on shore.
