Qualifying period set for special Forsyth Co. State House election

By Ken Stanford Contributing Editor
ATLANTA - Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp has set the qualifying dates for two special State House elections, one involving parts of Forsyth County.

Gov. Nathan Deal recently announced that special elections to fill the vacancies in State House Districts 2 and 22 will be held Jan. 7.

Kemp says qualifying will begin next Monday and run through next Wednesday.

The election for State House District 2 will occur in portions of Catoosa, Walker and Whitfield counties. Jay Neal of LaFayette stepped down after being named earlier this month by Gov. Deal to be executive director of the state's Office of Transition, Support and Re-entry.

The election for State House District 22 will take place in portions of Cherokee, Forsyth and Fulton counties. Calvin Hill of Canton held the seat until his death Oct. 30, three months after being diagnosed with a precursor to leukemia which, family members said, progressed quickly.

The elections are non-partisan special elections with no party primaries. However, each candidate's party affiliation, if any, will be listed on the ballot. Run-off elections, if needed, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

The voter registration deadline for the special elections is Dec. 9.
