We in America treated our Vietnam veterans terribly. The fact many Americans opposed that war was absolutely no reason to treat returning GI's with disrespect. In the midst of that anti-military era there was talk of building a World War II monument, but it never got off the ground. So it was the WW II vets themselves, led by Senator Bob Dole, who raised the money and built it. Members of the local Post 7 of the American Legion helped. The money was raised; the memorial monument built; and only then was it turned over to the Park Service. Never in a million years would we believe a President would order it closed.
