Pogo Had Politics Figured Out

The Obama administration's recent claims about what great things he has done for our economy brought Pogo to mind. For those of you who are too young to remember, and for those of you who may have forgotten, Pogo was a comic strip that had the delightful ability to poke fun at all of us, and was especially good at taking politics apart at the seams.

Pogo was a possum who lived in the Okefenokee Swamp with a bunch of other animals. And on the day I am referring to, Pogo-the-Possum and Albert-the-Alligator were sitting in a flat-bottom boat, under an umbrella, fishing in the swamp. It was one of those rainy days when things were quiet and the fish were not biting.

Now, Albert-the-Alligator was running for re-election as the Mayor of the Okefenokee, so to take advantage of the lull in fishing, Albert-the-Alligator was asking Pogo-the-Possum to vote for Albert's re-election. Albert was noting all the wonderful things he had done for the Okefenokee during his first term as Mayor, and finally Pogo-the-Possum got fed up with that, and said to Albert-the-Alligator: "Well, just tell me what you have done for me LATELY." Whereupon Albert-the-Alligator stuck his hand out from underneath the umbrella, and replied: "It has stopped raining, hasn't it?" Pogo's reply was quick and short: "You didn't make that happen." And Albert-the-Alligator came back at him just as quickly: "I may not have had anything to do with the stopping of the rain" he said, " but it happened during my administration, didn't it?" I miss old Pogo.
