Girls basketball: Lady Knights fall to Lanier

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter
OAKWOOD -- For three minutes the Johnson girls looked like they were poised to break their 17-game losing streak against Lanier Friday night at the Johnson gym.

But Lanier held the Lady Knights to just seven points over the final 13 minutes of the first half en route to a 55-21 win in Region 8-AAAA action.

Johnson jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind its defense holding Lanier without a point for the first 3:50 of the game. But the Lady Longhorns got back in the game using its pressure defense.

Lanier (6-13, 2-1 Region 8A-AAAA) forced five straight Johnson turnovers to ignite a 15-3 run to close out the quarter for a 15-7 lead. The Lady Longhorns kept the pressure on opening the second quarter with an 11-0 run to blow the game open. They would take a 31-11 lead in halftime.

Johnson (0-18, 0-4) would not get any closer as Lanier opened the second half with a 12-2 run to put the game out of reach.

The Lady Longhorns were led by Shelby Threlkeld and Tamar Osborne with 16 points apiece.

Johnson was led by Britteny Greene with eight points and Sarah Williams with six points.
