Arrest made in Atlanta officer shooting

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) -- A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged with shooting a new Atlanta police officer in the face Friday during a chase.

Investigators charged Frank Nance, 20, with aggravated assault, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, cocaine possession and other offenses. He was being held Saturday in the Fulton County jail. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.

He is accused of shooting Officer Reginald Robinson, who was listed in stable condition Saturday at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Police said Robinson was questioning a man over a suspected drug deal in southwest Atlanta around 6:30 p.m. when the man fled. The suspect shot the policeman once in the face during the foot pursuit, said Officer John Chafee, a department spokesman.

Authorities said additional officers arriving in the area detained the suspect and recovered a weapon.

The 35-year-old officer graduated from Atlanta's police academy in November.

The incident is under investigation by the department's Office of Professional Standards, a step that is taken anytime a police officer is involved in a shooting.
