ELBERTON - Three women have been wounded and the gunman is dead following a fight over property in Elbert County Thursday.
Elbert County Sheriff Melvin Andrews said the shooting happened at a home on Middleton Church Road. He said the gunman, identified as Donnie Williams, argued with three woman, two of them relatives, over a family land deal.
Andrews said a witness to the shooting tried to stop Williams.
"At that time, Mr. Williams retrieved another pistol and when the witness seen it, he broke and run to go back in the house," said Andrews. "Mr. Williams fired two shots, but he didn't strike him."
The sheriff said a manhunt for Williams ensued and when authorities found him in a wooded area, Williams turned the gun on himself.
Williams and two of the women who were shot were airlifted to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Williams died from his wounds. There is no word on the conditions of the women who were shot.
