CLARKESVILLE -- Piedmont College women's golfer Katarina Hodge of Dublin got the 2012-13 season off to a good start Tuesday as she claimed individual medalist honors against a national-caliber field at the seventh Annual Piedmont College Fall Invitational held at The Orchard Golf & Country Club in Clarkesville.
The PC women's team finished fourth out of 10 schools while the men's squad finished fifth out of six teams.
Hodge carded a 36-hole total of 73-73-146, which was good for a pair of new records-both the tournament scoring record and the PC school 36-hole record. The pair of one-over rounds also matches her own record of +1 over 18 hole round. Hodge double-bogeyed her first hole of the day only to rebound with three birdies before her strong finish.
Top-ranked Methodist University "A" team, which is the 15-time defending NCAA Division III National Champion, won the women's team honors in record-setting fashion posting a 302-304--606 which was good for both a new 18 and 36-hole tournament record. The Lady Monarchs' win was their sixth consecutive at the PC Fall Invitational. MU "B" was the tournament runner up.
As a team PC posted a 330-319--649 which trailed #16-ranked Birmingham Southern by just eight strokes for third.
For the Lady Lions seniors, Maria Carter of Duluth and Cayla Banks of Tyrone carded a pair of 167's to finish 22nd out of 58 golfers. Banks rebounded from a first round 89 to score 78 on moving day while Carter posted a balanced score of 83-84. Freshman Taylor Mitcham of McDonough scored an 86-85--171 to finish 28th in her first collegiate tournament. Sophomore Cortney Boggs of Colbert completed a total of five top-30 finishes for PC with an 87-86--173, 29th).
On the men's side, freshman Joe Morris of Winder was the Lions' top finisher with a two-day total of 77-82--159 which was good for 16th place out of 32 golfers. Classmate Andrew Long of Lilburn participated as an individual and also played well, posting a 78-79-157, which was good for 14th overall.
Young Harris scored a 295-302--597 which was good for a 12-stroke victory.
