SUWANEE - In its 29th celebration, the Suwanee Day festival will incorporate many changes, including an earlier start time.
This year, Suwanee Day will start one hour earlier. Suwanee's annual celebration of community will commence at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, at Town Center Park.
The festival kicks off with a parade that will march up Buford Highway by Town Center Park and then down Main Street. This year's parade theme is "Catch a Dream," and cash prizes are awarded to parade participants for best reflection of theme, most entertaining, most creative, and best of show. Applications to participate in the parade are due by September 5 and are available at www.suwaneeday.com.
Grand marshal duties will be shared by two young women - 2008 and 2012 Olympian and former University of Georgia swimmer Amanda Weir and Suwanee area resident Leighton Jordan, who is the current Miss Georgia and will compete in the Miss America pageant in January.
In addition to more than 225 arts and crafts, food, and sponsor booths, Suwanee Day 2012 will feature nearly 12 hours of entertainment on two stages. The entertainment line-up is all over the map, with performers representing Mexico, India, and Great Britain. A full entertainment schedule is available at www.suwaneeday.com.
The Smithereens, known for writing and playing catchy 1960s-influenced power pop, will be the headline performer, taking the Town Center stage at 8:15 p.m. The band's biggest hits arrived in the late 1980s into the early '90s and include "Blood and Roses," "Only a Memory," "A Girl Like You," "Blues Before and After," "Top of the Pops," and "House We Used to Live In."
The concert and admission to Suwanee Day are free. The festival will conclude about 10 p.m. following a fireworks display.
