DAWSONVILLE - The State Route 53/Jasper Highway bridge over the Amicalola Creek has been reopened to traffic following several weeks of Department of Transportation refurbishing.
Georgia DOT announced Tuesday that maintenance work on the bridge over Amicalola Creek west of Tinsley Chapel Road on Highway 53 was completed Monday at 4:30 p.m. and all lanes were open to traffic at that time.
The existing concrete driving surface or bridge deck was removed by hydro-blasting then a new concrete driving surface was poured.
DOT officials said the work took longer than the expected two week projection but was finished well before the overall project completion date of September 31, 2012.
This bridge is one of three included in a $1.9 million contract awarded to Comanche Construction of Marietta. The State Route 11 Bridge over the Middle Oconee River in Jackson County and SR 246 Bridge over the Little Tennessee River in Rabun County are also a part of this contract.
