Longtime educator, public servant dies

GAINESVILLE - A longtime educator and public servant from Gainesville, Guy Cabe, died Sunday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Cabe, who was 87, graduated from Stephens County High School at age 16 and the University of Georgia at age 19, with a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture and later completed his Masters Degree in Education at the University of Georgia.

He began teaching high school when he was 19 and taught at Athens High School for 16 years. He then transferred to the state Department of Vocational Rehabilitation and later became the District Director for the Georgia Department of Human Resources, covering Northeast Georgia.

Cabe retired in 1978, however, he continued his career at Gainesville State College, also serving as the Director for the Northeast Georgia History Center in Gainesville. He active in the Rotary Club and Civitan Club and was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels and the Ministry of Caring at First Baptist Church, where he was a longtime member and deacon.

A celebration of life service will be held 2:00 Monday in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church on Green Street.
