CLEMSON, S.C. -- Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips has announced he will retire next summer.
The university said Thursday that Phillips will stay on until his contract ends in July 2013 to give the school time to conduct a thorough search for his replacement. Phillips came to Clemson from Oklahoma State in 2002.
In Phillips' decade at Clemson, the school has won 13 Atlantic Coast Conference titles. Last year's ACC championship in football was the first in 20 years for the program that once dominated that league.
Men's basketball made it to four NCAA tournaments in a row for the first time.
But some programs like baseball and women's basketball have slipped in the past several years.
Clemson has invested $140 million in its athletics programs since Phillips took over.
