Bogart's McCain wins Atlanta Open at CGC

GAINESVILLE -- Seth McCain, PGA apprentice at Jennings Mill Country Club in Bogart, won the Yamaha Atlanta Open at Chattahoochee Golf Club Tuesday.

McCain carded a final round of 4-under par 68 for a two-day total of 6-under par 138, and then survived a hole-by-hole playoff with the 2000 Yamaha Atlanta Open champion and PGA life member James Mason of Dillard and PGA apprentice Danny Nungesser from Whitewater Creek Country Club in Fayetteville.

McCain won on the second playoff hole with a par when he was able to get up and down from the left greenside bunker for the second time in the playoff on the Par 4 440-yard 18th hole. Nungesser's errant tee shot found the right rough which led to a bogey five, and Mason, a past winner on the Champions Tour was eliminated with a bogey on the first playoff hole.

With the victory, McCain not only won the state's oldest golf tournament but also collected the first place check for $3,600. Bob Royak of Duluth, the 2007 champion, and Chris Waters of Athens shared low-amateur honors at 4-under par 140 and finished tied for seventh place in the overall standings.

Current Georgia PGA player of the year point's leader, David Potts of the Country Club of the South rebounded in the final round with a 6-under par 66 to finish one shot out of the playoff along with PGA professionals Jeff Hull of Athens and Stephen Keppler of Marietta Country Club in Kennesaw.
