PENSACOLA, Fla. - Emergency officials in the Florida Panhandle are hoping to get a better look at storm damage today after the waters recede.
Flooding from torrential rains damaged homes and closed roads through the Panhandle over the weekend, cutting power to a county jail and sending residents to emergency shelters.
More than 600 inmates at the Escambia County Jail were left without power and air conditioning. The rains left more than 5 feet of water on the floor of a part of the jail that houses the laundry and kitchen facilities. Extra deputies were brought in to beef up security.
Authorities estimate as much as $4 million in damage at the sheriff's facilities.
After getting more than 13 inches of rain Saturday, Pensacola saw nearly two more inches yesterday.
In Alabama, the city of Mobile had nearly six inches Saturday and about three more inches yesterday.
Forecasters initially feared that another four to eight inches would fall yesterday along the coast, but the storm system pulled more of the precipitation further inland.
