Lightning sparks fires across Gwinnett County

By B.J. Williams
GWINNETT COUNTY - Gwinnett County was hit hard Monday evening when summer storms rolled across the area.

Lt. Eric Eberly with the Gwinnett Fire Department said crews were kept busy with a number of calls, including three fires that were sparked by lightning strikes.

In one instance, a house caught fire on Chesapeake Drive in Lilburn. The fire caused moderate damage to the home, according to Eberly. He said the family who lives at the home was not displaced.

Also, lightning hit an apartment building on Grayson Highway in Grayson. Eberly said three apartments at the Tree Corner Apartment complex were damaged.

In addition, Eberly said an outbuilding at a home on Bart Johnson Road in Buford was hit by lightning and was destroyed.

All three incidents happened in a one-and-a-half hour time period starting just before 6:00 p.m.

No one was hurt in any of the incidents.
