AAA: 7 in 10 Georgians plan to take a summer vacation this year

TAMPA, Fla. - A recent AAA Consumer Pulse survey shows the majority of Georgia residents (70%) plan to take a summer vacation of four days or more between May and September-a 10 percent increase from last summer.

In terms of spending, half of Georgia travelers (50%) plan to spend $1,000 or less, with two in five (39%) spending $1,001 to $3,000, and 11 percent spending more than $3,000 on their vacation.

While there is an 11 percent decrease in the number of Georgia residents who plan to drive to their destination (56% in 2012 vs. 67% in 2011), there's a 16 percent increase in those who plan to utilize air travel as their main mode of transportation. In 2011, about two in 10 Georgia travelers (22%) said they would fly to their destination, while 38 percent said they plan to fly this year.

"Summer vacations are a much anticipated event for many Americans and it's great to see more Georgia residents plan travel this summer, whether they stay local and enjoy Georgia's attractions or fly to faraway destinations," said Brent Hubele, vice president, AAA Travel, The Auto Club Group.

While the majority of Georgia residents traveling in the next three months (77%) plan to travel within the United States, 14 percent of respondents said they will take both a domestic and international summer vacation, according to the survey.

The survey was conducted online among residents living in the Southern Region of The Auto Club Group (Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee) from April 25 - 27. A total of 205 Georgia residents completed the survey. The survey has a maximum margin of error of +/- of 6.8 percentage points. AAA says overall survey responses are weighted by gender and age to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the adult population (18+) in Georgia.
