DAHLONEGA - North Georgia College and & State University (NGCSU), along with the state's District 2 Public Health Department and the North Georgia Community Foundation, will host a luncheon to discuss the new public health emphasis on shaping policy, systems and environments to promote healthy communities.
The event, scheduled for May 17 at 11:30 will feature Carolyn Crump and James Emery of the University of North Carolina's Gillings School of Global Public Health.
"There are many great health and wellness successes occurring in our communities," said Anderson Flen, District Health Promotion Coordinator and Educator of District 2 for Georgia. "This event will acknowledge some of these efforts and look at ways to further strengthen partnerships with businesses, nonprofits, healthcare, grantors, academia, government, and the religious community."
The new statewide public health program will support local ownership of health and wellness programs by offering assistance for counties and their partners to assess program sustainability and effectiveness. Community members are invited to participate in the luncheon to learn about community health and wellness and to provide input for future programs.
"The luncheon will also offer funders an opportunity to invest in building a stable revenue base for this region to objectively impact preventive healthcare in the local communities," Flen said.
Carroll Turner, director of the Manufacturing Development Center at Lanier Technical College and former CEO of Carolina Medical Inc., will be the moderator for the event.
"Here at the Lanier Technical College MDC many of our client start-up companies are medical device companies," Turner said. "I have a passion for improving community health."
The luncheon will be held in the banquet room of the university's dining hall, located at the intersection of West Main Street and Sunset Drive. To register, visit www.northgeorgia.edu/communityhealth.
