Woods fire turns into controlled burn by Corps

By B.J. Williams, Katie Highsmith
FLOWERY BRANCH - A woods fire that began around 5:30 Wednesday morning at Old Federal Park on Lake Lanier will continue to burn for several more hours, according to Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle.

"The Corps has decided to go ahead and conduct a controlled burn where they will go ahead and continue the burn and help it to burn itself out, taking the fuel load away," said Cagle.

Cagle said that frees up the fire department from having to continue to put out hot spots throughout the day.

"This is on the boat side of the park," Cagle said. "There are no campfires or grills in this area, so the cause of the fire is still unknown at this time."

Cagle said the fire consumed about two-and-a-half to three acres of Army Corps of Engineers property.

Cagle said they used two engines and "thousands and thousands" of gallons of water to extinguish the fire. He noted that dry conditions allowed the fire to spread quickly.

He said no buildings in the campground were damaged. No one was hurt while battling the blaze.
