ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves have optioned right-hander Cory Gearrin to Triple-A Gwinnett to clear a roster spot for Tim Hudson to come off the disabled list and start in Sunday's game against Pittsburgh.
Hudson is making his season debut after recovering from surgery in November to repair a herniated disc in his back. The right-hander had discomfort in his back the past two seasons, and the surgery was scheduled after the pain became worse during his offseason workouts.
Hudson was 16-10 with a 3.22 ERA last season. He allowed one run and six hits in 5 2-3 innings in his final rehab start with Gwinnett.
Gearrin was recalled on Tuesday when struggling right-hander Jair Jurrjens was sent to Gwinnett. Gearrin did not appear in a game with Atlanta.
