FBHS student is State STAR Student runner-up

GAINESVILLE - Flowery Branch High School senior Alind Amedi was first runner-up in this year's State STAR Student competition.

The winners were announced at a banquet in Atlanta Monday NIGHT. There were 20 other regional winners competing for the state title. The STAR Student program is in its 54th year and is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE).

Amedi chose Jeremy Purdy, his twelfth-grade AP Human Geography teacher, as his STAR Teacher.

Lisa Wang, a senior at Cobb County's George Walton High School, was named the 2012 State STAR Student. She named Dr. Tina Link, her eleventh-grade AP Biology teacher at George Walton High School, as her STAR Teacher.

Wang was honored with a $5,000 scholarship from AT&T Georgia, presented by AT&T Georgia Vice-President of Regulatory & External Affairs Pete Martin. Dr. Link received a $2,500 cash award from Donna Moseley, representing the Frances Wood Wilson Foundation, Inc.

Amedi was presented a $1,000 scholarship from the PAGE Foundation by PAGE Foundation Secretary and VALIC Southeast Region Vice President Allen Thomas. He also received a $1,000 scholarship from The Coca-Cola Company presented by J. Mark Davis, president of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, and a $1,000 scholarship from Operation Goodwill Atlanta Ford Motor Company Fund presented
by Don Conroy, Atlanta Region's sales director for Ford Motor Company.

PAGE Executive Director Dr. Allene Magill presented Purdy with the Mozelle Christian Award of $500. President and CEO of Sizemore, Inc. and Chair of the Georgia Chamber's Education and Workforce Development Committee
Charlene Sizemore, presented Purdy with a $500 Award on behalf of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
