FORT MILL, S.C. -- The Charlotte Knights received strong pitching for the second straight game and beat the Gwinnett Braves, 2-0, in the finale of the three-game series at Knights' Stadium in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
Less than 24 hours removed from a game in which they could only tally 3 hits, the G-Braves only come up with four hits in this game.
Charlotte scored its first run in the bottom of the fourth as center-fielder Jordan Danks doubled to right-center with one out off of Gwinnett starter Erik Cordier (L, 0-1). Danks would then score on a single to right by right-fielder Greg Golson.
The Knights added their final run in the fifth off of Cordier. Second baseman Tyler Kuhn singled to left to lead off the inning and scored on a triple down the right field line by left-fielder Jim Gallagher.
Charlotte right-hander Dylan Axelrod (W, 2-1) was sharp in picking up the win. He worked 7.2 innings, gave up four hits, walked one and struck out six. Former Gwinnett pitcher Deunte Heath pitched to one batter in the eighth and right-hander Brian Bruney (S, 4) pitched a scoreless ninth.
Cordier's loss was his first of the season. He pitched 4.1 innings with eight hits, two earned runs, four walks and two strikeouts. The bullpen trio of Buddy Carlyle, Jose Lugo and Cory Gearrin combined for 3.2 innings of scoreless ball.
At the plate, G-Braves second baseman Drew Sutton went 1-for-4 with a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Right-fielder Jordan Parraz was 1-3 with a single to extend his hitting streak to six games.
After an off day, the Gwinnett Braves (12-6) and Charlotte Knights (10-8) continue the six game home-and-home series Tuesday night in Lawrenceville, GA. Right-hander Tim Hudson (1-0, 0.00) gets the start for Gwinnett in his fourth Major League rehab assignment of the season. Charlotte pitches left-hander Charlie Leesman (1-1, 5.02).
