CORNELIA - Residents were allowed back home, hours after about 25 homes were evacuated following a gas main break in Cornelia Friday morning.
City Manager Donald Anderson said a contractor was installing water lines for the city in the area of Hoyt Street near Wood Street when the incident occurred.
"The contractor is the one that dug through the gas line, I'm not sure if it was marked or not," Anderson said.
Anderson said there was a school in the area but it was not affected since it was closed for the day.
The 25 homes were evacuated as a precaution.
According to Anderson, the gas main was repaired and affected residents were allowed back in around 2:30 p.m.
