Funeral planned for former Gainesville Fire Chief

GAINESVILLE - Funeral services for former Gainesville Fire Chief Verner (Sug) Hamrick have been announced.

Hamrick, who was 87, died Thursday at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 25, 2012 at St. Paul UMC in Gainesville with interment to follow in Alta Vista Cemetery.

Hamrick was a native of Eatonton, Georgia but made his home in Gainesville, Georgia.

He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church on Washington Street for over 60 years.

"Sug" served on the Gainesville City Fire Department for 44 years serving as Fire Chief for 19 of those years.

Current Gainesville City Fire Chief Jon Canada said the fire department will provide an honor guard to serve at the funeral home during the visitation for Hamrick. He said the family has also requested firefighters serve as pall bearers for the former chief.

He was a member of the Paul E. Bolding Post # 7 American Legion and a member of the 40 & 8. He was a member of Masonic Lodge # 219 of Gainesville and the Elks Club.
