GAINESVILLE -- Class AAA No. 2 Gainesville held off a late rally by Johnson to hold on for a 6-5 win in a key Region 8B-AAA game at Ivey-Watson Field.
The Elephants got a solid outing from Shad Petree, who fanned 11 in six innings. He allowed two first inning runs and then settled down to earn his first win of the season. Stephen mason earned his first save of the year pitching out of a jam in the seventh.
Gainesville took the lead for good with three runs in the second and then increased its lead to 6-3 after the fifth inning. Johnson scored twice in the sixth to cut the lead to just one run but could not finish the comeback.
Gainesville (9-0, 4-0 in subregion) will play host to Chestatee on Friday while Johnson will play host to Stephens County.
