CALHOUN -- Rabun County was outscored 12-0 by Calhoun in overtime as the Lady Wildcats lost a 63-51 heartbreaker to the Lady Yellow Jackets Friday night in the first round of the Class AA playoffs.
Rabun County twice held three-point leads in the closing minute of regulation but twice Calhoun's Bree Walraven kept the Lady Jackets alive with 3-pointers, the biggest one coming with just four seconds left to send the game to overtime. Rabun County also contributed by missing four free throws in the final minute of regulation.
"(Calhoun) had the ball the final 30 seconds but could not get a shot off because we really played great defense," Rabun County coach Dee Dee Dillard said. "The Walraven girl just threw it up there and it banked in. What can you say."
In the overtime, Calhoun scored on two quick baskets forcing Rabun County to foul. The Lady Jackets hit 8-of-9 free throws in the overtime period to pull away for the win.
"In the overtime we just never recovered. They got a quick lead, we fouled, and then we just couldn't make a shot. It was a tough ending but we had a great season. I'm proud of the girls," Dillard said.
Rabun County had control of the game in the first half taking a 24-19 lead into halftime. Calhoun, however, responded in the third quarter with a big run to take a 35-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Rabun County would answer back to start the fourth quarter but could not hold on.
Eight players scored for Rabun County but no one had double figures.
