8-AA tournament: Dawson stuns No. 9 East Hall

HARTWELL -- Dawson County pulled off the biggest upset so far in the Region 8-AA boys basketabll tournament with a 71-59 win over Class AA ninth-ranked East Hall Friday night in the semifinals at Hart County High School.

The Tigers (22-6) led from nearly start-to-finish opening with a 23-17 first quarter. They led 31-27 at halftime and increased the lead to 50-42 heading into the fourth quarter.

Dawson County, which is rolling at the right time with its fifth straight win, will take on the winner of the other semifinal between Jefferson and Rabun County on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Gunnar Armstrong paced the Tigers with 19 points. Bruce Clark had 14 points, Will Anglin 12 points, and Jonathan Sanderson 10 points for Dawson County.

Josh Hampton had his best game of the tournament with 30 points to lead East Hall (21-7). But no other Vikings scored in double figures.

East Hall will face Rabun County in the boys consolation game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Hartwell. Dawson County, meanwhile, will take on Jefferson for the region title at 8:30 p.m.
