Panthers claim first-ever state playoff berth

JEFFERSON -- Jackson County clinched its first-ever state playoff berth after knocking off Elbert County 33-28 Friday night at home.

The Panthers (6-3, 4-2 in Region 8-AAA) can notch their most wins in a season since 1991 with a win over Morgan County (7-2, 4-2) next week in Madison. That game will decide the third seed from the region in the state playoffs. The last time Jackson County won six games in a season was in 1990.

Quarterback Kyle Daniel had 210 yards and two touchdowns on 19-of-26 passing to lead the Panthers offense. Dustin Scott had a huge game for Jackson County with 165 yards rushing and two touchdowns and 39 yards receiving and catching both of Daniel's two TD passes.

Xavier Harper had 130 yards receiving and Ben Brissey added 70 yards receiving for the Panthers.

Defensively, Garrett Holt, Evan Breakspear, and River Bryant harassed the Blue Devils all night. Holt had 12 tackles, one interception and a forced fumble. Breakspear had 12 tackles, and Bryant had five tackles and one fumble recovery for Jackson County.
