The Political Battle in North Carolina

I was in Charlotte, North Carolina, last week and got to see a number of the TV commercials running in contested states. Romney was making points about the economy and jobs. Obama was telling folks who receive government money that Romney is going to take it away from them. Up until the first debate, it was assumed North Carolina would go for Obama. Now it is a toss-up. Even Democrats agree it can go either way. But the ad that was most interesting to me was a full page in the Sunday paper with a picture of Billy Graham, of Montreat, North Carolina, signed by him, and paid for by The Billy Graham Evangelical Association. It states, and I quote: "On November 6, the day before my 94th birthday, our nation will hold one of the most critical elections in my lifetime. We are at a crossroads and there are profound moral issues at stake. I strongly urge you to vote for candidates who support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and woman, protect the sanctity of life, and defend our religious freedoms. The Bible speaks clearly on these crucial issues. Join me in praying for America, that we will turn our hearts back toward God." I read that and thought: well hooray for Billy Graham. At a time when the Judeo-Christian foundation of American democracy is under attack, I am delighted to see someone of his stature speak out in the midst of a contentious political season.<br />
