TIGER -- Rabun County used a 17-point second quarter to grab the lead against Union County and then cruised to a 38-10 win Friday night in a key Region 8-AA game for both teams.
The Wildcats (5-3, 3-2 in region) snapped a two-game region losing streak and stayed tied with Greene County, which beat Oglethorpe County 56-50, for third place in the standings.
Rabun County will travel to Greene County next week in a battle for sole possession of third place. Jefferson leads the region with a 5-0 record and Washington-Wilkes is second with a 4-1 mark.
Against Union Count (5-3, 2-3) Rabun's Wes Holcombe had a big game passing for 276 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman receiver Charlie Woerner also had a huge game with 140 yards receiving, including an 86-yard TD catch, and 87 yards rushing with two touchdowns.
Rabun led 17-3 at halftime on a pair of Holcome TD passes and then extended the lead to 24-3 on Holcombe's third touchdown pass of the game. Woerner then took control in the fourth quarter with two rushing touchdowns for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats defense won the battle against a potent Union County offense forcing three interceptions from T. Bentley, who had just 105 yards passing on just 7-of-22 passing.
