By Staff
HELENA - The funeral service for Correctional Officer Larry Stell, a graduate of Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at Lowe's Funeral Home in Helena.

Stell, 46, died as a result of being assaulted by an inmate at Telfair State Prison in Helena Thursday night, according to Georgia Department of Corrections officials. Stell had worked with the corrections department since August 2001.

Saying that the incident is under investigation, the Department of Corrections declined to give further details on the assault, or to release the name of the inmate responsible.

Stell was a 1990 graduate of Truett-McConnell College in Cleveland, where he had served as freshman class president, was active in leadership with the Baptist Student Union, performed in the concert and jazz bands, and was voted a Sophomore Superlative for most school spirit.

He also was the founder of Larry Stell Ministries and was active in both online and other ministries. He played his trombone in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Fellow TMC alums are planning a memorial service for Stell in the Atlanta area in late December.
