JEFFERSON -- Jefferson advanced to the second round of the Class AA state softball tournament with a dominating sweep of Manchester Wednesday at home.
The Lady Dragon' whipped the Blue Devils 15-0 and 14-0 behind Morgan McKinney, who was the winning pitcher for both games.
McKinney pitched six total innings allowing just three hits and no runs while fanning 14 batters. Emily Holman got the save in Game 2 allowing one hit and striking out the side in one inning of work.
Jefferson banged out 23 hits in the two games.
Jefferson (19-14) next will play host to Dade County, which swept Lovett, next week in the second round.
It was not a good day, however, for the rest of Region 8-AA. In one of the biggest upsets in Class AA, eighth-ranked Union County was swept out of the playoffs in 6-1 and 8-0 losses to unranked Bremen.
Heard County knocked out Social Circle while Washington-Wilkes will face a deciding Game 3 against Region 5-AA champ and sixth-ranked Bowden on Thursday.
