GAINESVILLE - Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada announced his retirement Wednesday after 20 years of service with the City of Gainesville.

In a press release from the city, Mayor Danny Dunagan said Chief Canada's commitment to the Fire Department was unparalleled. "Jon grew up in the Fire Department and has spent the majority of his life working with and for the residents of Gainesville. We have benefitted greatly from his knowledge of fire service and his dedication to this community. He will be greatly missed," Mayor Dunagan said.

In his retirement announcement Chief Canada said he has enjoyed his time with the City of Gainesville and appreciates the opportunities that have been afforded to him during his tenure. He is looking forward to spending time with his family and pursuing other opportunities in the private business sector.

Padgett said he will appoint an interim chief prior to Chief Canada's departure October 12 and begin the recruitment process soon for a new chief.
