GDOT to review accidents on Clarks Bridge Rd.

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - Accidents on Clarks Bridge Road near Honeysuckle Road, some of them deadly, will get a review by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Teri Pope with the DOT said while she doesn't know the exact number of accidents that have occurred on that stretch of State Route 284 over the past year, she knows it's been enough to raise a red flag. She said the first issue that DOT engineers will review is the "why" behind each crash.

"Things like what time of day it was, what the weather was, what the visibility was, where the crash or the loss of control began," she said.

Pope said that warning signs have been in place along that stretch of the road for years.

"There are signs that warn of a curve ahead and they are the yellow advisory signs, which also advise a lower speed limit," said Pope.

She said after the review, the DOT will determine if there's something that can be done to improve the safety of the road.

Accident reports from both the Georgia State Patrol and the Hall County Sheriff's Office will be under review by DOY engineers.

Pope noted that perceptions by area residents could be different than what the DOT will see on paper because there may have been minor accidents on the road that have gone unreported.

Pope said there's no way to know what kind of action, if any, the DOT will take until all of the accident reports are scrutinized.

She said there's no timeline for engineers to complete their review.
