WINDER - The Barrow County Sheriff's Office Traffic Enforcement Unit placed first in its category in the state at a recent meeting in Macon sponsored by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.<br />

In addition, the unit was also awarded the Occupant Protection Award.<br />

"I am extremely proud of the hard work our deputies are willing to perform in order to keep the motoring citizens in Barrow County safe," Sheriff Jud Smith said. "The citizens of Barrow County should feel blessed to have such a high caliber of people working for the Sheriff's Office." <br />

This marks the fourth year in a row the Sheriff's Office has placed in this competition and the third year in a row it has placed first in its category. With the awards have come $20,000 cash from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety Governor's Challenge Program. The money has been used to purchase equipment for the Sheriff's Office and is not part of any grant.<br />
