Amtrak resumes some service in N.C.; Gainesville service still on hold

By The Associated Press
RALEIGH - Amtrak is resuming passenger train service in North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Irene, but service to Gainesville and the rest of north Georgia remains on hold.

Officials say the Piedmont and Carolinian trains will resume service on Monday. However, the Carolinian will only provide a Charlotte-to-Raleigh run as efforts continue to clear tracks in the Northeast Corridor of debris and to wait for flood waters in the region to subside as well as waiting for restoration of power. The Carolinian normally includes stops in Richmond, Va., Washington, Philadelphia and New York.

The Silver Star, Silver Meteor, Palmetto and the Crescent, which also serve points in North Carolina, will not make their runs through the state until further notice.

The Crescent also serves north Georgia, using Norfolk-Southern lines, with stops in Toccoa, Gainesville and Atlanta.
