Hall GOP opposes county state House redistricting plan

GAINESVILLE - Opposition is growing to the seven-House member Hall County state Legislative map now before the Georgia Legislature.

The Hall County Republican Party has now filed a formal opposition to the plan.

Party chairman Charles Lewis says a resolution opposing the current plan has been drafted and sent to the General Assembly, which Monday began considering reapportionment of the state's political boundaries based on last year's Census.

Lewis says the proposal to increase the number of state Representatives in the Hall County delegation to seven from the current four would split the county up too much.

The Hall County Republican Party wants the legislature to leave things as they are.

TEXT OF HALL COUNTY REPUBLICAN PARTY RESOLUTION:

Whereas, the new proposed state house map takes an already divided Hall County and splits it up further--from four representatives to seven--making it difficult to create any sense of community and purpose for the people of Hall at the State Capitol.

Whereas, Hall County, home to Governor Nathan Deal, is a major commercial, cultural and medical center for much of the population of northeast Georgia,

Whereas, a number of local issues in Hall--from water, to sewer, to major intersections and other road projects--are difficult to deal with in the best of circumstances, these issues will be more difficult to deal with as some representatives' priorities will be in other counties, and

Whereas, this could pose serious difficulties for some Hall County municipalities, therefore be it

Resolved, that the proposed map be reviewed with an eye to reducing the number of representatives for Hall County, and be it further

Resolved, that the Hall County Republican Party strongly suggests that the new map divide Hall County no more than the existing one.

Resolved, that a major population center of Northeast Georgia deserves a more unified delegation in the State House.
