BUFORD - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the unscheduled release of water through Buford Dam Monday morning was necessary to help send needed water downstream.
The Forsyth County Fire Department sounded the alarm about 10:30 Monday morning for an "off-schedule, emergency" release of water out of concern for fishermen and others on the Chattahoochee River downstream from the dam.
"First, (I) would not call this an emergency release," corps spokeswoman Lisa Coghlan said. "We had to increase generation this morning to the daily schedule to help send water downstream to ensure the 750 cfs (cubic feet per second) was met at Peachtree Creek. Over the weekend, Morgan Falls Dam got too low and additional water was needed to ensure flows were met."
Forsyth County Fire Department Capt. Jason Shivers said the warning sirens were scheduled to sound but there was concern that some river users who had called and gotten the "scheduled" release times would be caught offguard by the rising water.
The water release was to begin at 10:55 Monday morning and continue until 1:10 Monday afternoon.
