It will be interesting to see what north Georgia softball teams come up with as an encore to 2010.
Last season, Buford won its fourth consecutive Class AA state title while White County shocked Class AAA to win its first-ever state championships behind a high-powered offense. Union County advanced to the Class AA title game before falling to the Lady Wolves.
What is known is that little expects to change in Class AA as Buford (Region 6-AA) and Union County (Region 8-AA) once again figure to be strong contenders for the state title. What isn't known is which team will be this year's White County and separate itself from the pack in regions like 8-AAA and 8-AAAA, which also boast strong state title contenders.
In Region 6-AA, Buford is once again expected to be the team to beat despite having to replace nearly its entire infield and both of its top pitchers. Pitching will be the key with two inexperienced hurlers at the varsity level in junior Mikala Price and a pair of freshmen in Bria Bush, and Tessa Daniels.
But Tony Wolfe, who will be trying for the program's fifth-straight state title, believes his Lady Wolves have a chance to defend the title.
"We will be young in some areas but I think we should be a very solid team by the end of the season and contend for another title," Wolfe said. "The key will be our young pitchers and how well they perform."
Region 8-AA should once again be among the toughest in Class AA with three teams
