SCRANTON, Pa. -- The G-Braves traveled to Scranton, Pa., and beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees by a score of 3-1 in the opening of the five-game series at PNC Field on Monday night.
The Gwinnett Braves (63-52) win keeps the G-Braves two-and-a-half games back of the Durham Bulls (65-49) in the IL South.
In the top of the third inning, 1B Brandon Hicks hit a 2 RBI double to left field which put the Braves on top 2-0, a lead they would hold on to for the remainder of the game.
Todd Redmond started the game for the G-Braves and earned his 8th win of the season. Redmond tossed 7.0 IP allowing 0 R/ER on 6 H with 1 BB and matched a career high record for strikeouts in a game with 10. RHP Cory Gearrin entered the game in the 8th and earned his 4th hold of the season tossing 0.2 IP allowing 0 R/ER on 2 H with a BB. RHP Jairo Asencio closed out the game tossing 1.1 IP with 2 BB and 2 K's on his way to his 20th save of the year, putting him third in the IL in that stat.
The Braves were held to only four hits on the night, but still managed to score three runs. Hicks finished out the game going 1-for-3 with a 2B, 2 RBI, a BB and a SB. CF Matt Young had the lone multi-hit game for the G-Braves, finishing the night going 2-for-5 with a R, and a 2B. SS Tyler Pastornicky ended his 12 game hitting streak with an 0-3 performance, but still managed to get on base, making it a 13 game on base streak. He also stole a base, walked and recorded a SAC in the game. 2B Ruben Gotay was the only other G-Brave with a hit on the night. Gotay finished going 1-for-3 with a BB.
The Gwinnett Braves and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees continue their five game series Tuesday evening with a doubleheader at PNC Field. First pitch is at 5:35 p.m. In game one, the G-Braves send out LHP Yohan Flande (7-6, 3.72) vs. RHP Adam Warren (6-5, 3.34) for the Yankees. In game two RHP Steven Shell (2-2, 3.03) will represent the red and blue vs. RHP George Kontos (4-3, 2.70) for the Yankees.
