More than 31,000 enroll for new school year in Gainesville, Hall Co.

GAINESVILLE - Nearly 25,000 students showed up for class Monday in Hall County schools for the first day of the new school year and another 6,500 began the new year in Gainesville city schools.

Spokesman Gordon Higgins said the increase over last year in the county is 107. Total enrollment: 24,938.

"Our first-day headcount numbers are in line with expectations," Higgins added.

There was a decrease of 176 from a year ago at the elementary level (11,966); an increase of 122 in the middle schools (5,944); and an increase of 163 in the high schools (7,028).

Meanwhile, Supt. Merrianne Dyer said total enrollment in city schools was 6,516.

"We had 3,556 elementary students today and an additional 176 Pre-K will begin on Monday," Dr. Dyer said. "We had 1,276 at GMS (Gainesville Middle School) and ten additional middle school students at WM (Wood's Mill Academy) for a total of 1,286 middle school students. We had 1,498 students in high school - 1,410 at GHS (Gainesville High School) and 88 at WMHS (Wood's Mill High School)."

Dr. Dyer said last year, there were 6,345 students in Pre-K through grade 12 on the first day.

"We have an increase of 271 students on the first day over the prior year. "
