'Round the clock work planned on Ga. 365 this weekend

LULA - Around-the-clock work is planned this weekend on the resurfacing of Georgia 365 between Lula and Cornelia.

"This weekend, one lane closure will be in place around the clock on State Route 365," Georgia DOT District Engineer Todd McDuffie said. "During the day, one crew will continue installing the second or binder layer of asphalt from SR 105/Historic US 441 to SR 197. Overnight one lane will close for crews working on the northern end of the project, from SR 197 to the split at SR 17 and US 441. This crew is removing damaged asphalt down to eight inches and installing a new base layer. The "southern" section on SR 365 from SR 52, the Lula Crossroads, to Alto Mud Creek Road now has two layers of new asphalt finished."

This project involves three layers of asphalt. The base layer goes on bottom. The middle or second layer is the binder and the smooth driving surface is the top layer called the "topping." As new pavement is laid it will be at different heights until both lanes are completed. Beware of the uneven pavement between the lanes.

"Pop-up storms impacted the work plan this week, delaying work," McDuffie said. "Our contractor has decided to work around the clock to make up for that lost time. This weekend, road work will impact traffic on State Route 365. As crews, one lane will be closed. For your safety and ours, please slow down in this work zone. Remember, that all fines are doubled in a work zone."

The 21 mile long resurfacing project was awarded to C.W. Matthews Contracting of Marietta at a cost of $19.2 million. The contract completion date is June 30, 2012.
