UNDATED - Overnight storms brought some much-needed rain to parts of north Georgia, including the Gainesville area.
However, the heat wave continues with a heat advisory in effect for the entire state today except for a handful of mountain counties. (See separate posting.)
The storms caused a few downed trees in scattered areas but little other damage.
As the heat intensified yesterday, Macon tied the record high for the date, 100, which had been set in 2004. In Gainesville, the high at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport was 97, 12 degrees higher than average for the date, and just three degrees shy of the record of 100, which was set in 1957.
The airport recorded .28 inches of rain as the storms moved through early this morning. Rainfall to date for the year in Gainesville is now about six inches below normal.
