Local educators create learning center to benefit domestic violence survivors

GAINESVILLE - A group of local educators recently created a learning center for women and children living at Gateway Domestic Violence Center. The center includes computers, educational and language software and collections of books.

Members of Theta Chapter, Psi State Organization, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, wrote grants to secure money for this project though their state and international foundations. In addition to raising the funds necessary to complete this project, these teachers spent many hours volunteering at the shelter to assemble this project.

"This learning center has created a place where women can learn computer skills and search for jobs and housing," said Jessica Butler, executive director at Gateway. "When school starts back, children who are living at the shelter will have all of the tools they need to complete homework assignments on these new computers."

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education.

Gateway Domestic Violence Center provides comprehensive support services, emergency shelter, transitional housing, and legal advocacy for victims of domestic violence and their children. In 2010, Gateway assisted more than 1,000 women and children in Hall County.
