GAINESVILLE - Morning rush-hour traffic on Athens Highway south of Gainesville had to be re-routed for a time and there were delays into late morning Monday because of a tractor-trailer fire.

Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell says the first calls concerned some powerlines that were down on Athens Highway.

Moments later another call came - this one that a tractor-trailer was on fire just south of the A.L. Mangum Road intersection.

Both lanes of traffic were closed for several hours as the fire was extinguished, spilled diesel fuel was cleaned up and the wreckage removed. Even after one lane was reopened it was another couple of hours before the "all clear" was sounded.

Kimbell said the the rig's trailer was empty.

Hall County Fire Chief David Kimbrell says "Just before 7:00 this morning we received calls of a truck that had pulled some lines down on Athens Highway."

Kimbrell said that moments later, there was another call that a tractor-trailer was on fire on Athens Highway just south of A.L. Mangum Road.

"Upon arrival firefighters found the tractor portion of the trailer that was fully involved," Chief Kimbrell said. "The trailer was empty. The truck spilled approximately 60 gallons of diesel on the ground from the tanks.
