More hot weather forecast for Georgia

By The Associated Press
ATLANTA - Weather forecasters say more above-average temperatures are in store for Georgia, with a heat advisory issued for much of the state and an excessive heat warning in effect in some southeastern areas.

The National Weather Service says highs around the state are expected to be in the 90s to about 100 on Wednesday, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the mountains are expected to be in the 80s.

But the Augusta and Savannah areas are on alert for a dangerous combination of heat and humidity with heat indexes of 113-117 expected Wednesday.

Slightly cooler weather is expected statewide on Thursday with temperatures dropping into the 80s in many places.

On Tuesday, the high in Athens was 100 degrees, with 96 recorded in Columbus, 97 in Macon and 95 in Atlanta, where the record for the date is 103, set in 1980. The average for the date in Atlanta is 89.

The high in Gainesville was 93, well-below the record for the date, 106 in 1930 but the low of 77 that was recorded Tuesday and repeated Wednesday is the warmest low recorded so far this year at the airport.
