Shaw steps down as White County superintendent

By Dean Dyer, WRWH
CLEVELAND - In a surprising move, White County School Superintendent Dr. Paul Shaw announced his resignation Thursday night. Shaw talked with each of the board of education members Thursday and then made the announcement after an executive session of the board Thursday night following the regular portion of the monthly meeting. Media representatives and most staff members attending the meeting had left.

Shaw notified school employees of his resignation in a video message. He emailed a statement to the media announcing the action.

The resignation is effective September 2nd.

"I have been fortunate to work with such caring and committed school board members and a great team of teachers, administrators, and staff. The White County School System is a wonderful place to work," said Shaw.

Shaw has been superintendent since 2000 and had two years remaining on his contract with the system.

Friday morning Shaw said he had accepted a position at Piedmont College that does not require as much of his time. He also said he wanted more time to spend with his mother who is in an assisted living facility in South Carolina.

"I have been a superintendent for 26 years and its time to pursue other endeavors," said Shaw.

The White County Board of Education has scheduled a called meeting for next Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. to begin the process of finding a replacement.
